From Middle English spirit, from Old French espirit (spirit), from Latin spīritus (breath; spirit), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)peys- (to blow, breathe). Compare inspire, respire, transpire, all ultimately from Latin spīrō (to breathe, blow, respire).
