From Middle English seekly, sekely, siklich, sekeliche, equivalent to sick + -ly. Possibly a modification of Old English sīcle (sickly) and/or derived from Old Norse sjúkligr (sickly). Cognate with ziekelijk, siechlich, sygelig, sjuklig, sjúklegur. The verb is from the adjective.
