Borrowed from Latin mantissa, mantīsa, of unknown origin (said by Festus to be a loanword from -, but it may actually be from -, possibly through Etruscan mediation). Coincidentally, proparoxytone μάντισσα means "female foreteller", as in χαρτομάντισσα (cartomancer) or χειρομάντισσα (chiromancer).
