From Middle English diven, duven, from the merger of Old English dȳfan (to dip, immerse) (from Proto-Germanic *dūbijaną) and dūfan (to duck, dive, sink, penetrate) (past participle ġedofen). Cognate with dýfa, bedaven. See also deep, dip.
